Folate and folic acid are forms of water-soluble Vitamin B. Folate occurs naturally in food such as dark green vegetables, while Folic Acid is a synthetic vitamin. Folate (and Vit B12) are primarily ordered to detect deficiencies and to help diagnose the cause of certain anemias. One type of associated anemia is pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disease that affects the absorption of B12.
Folate and Vit B12 may also be used to help evaluate the general health and nutritional status of a person with signs of significant malnutrition or dietary malabsorption. These tests may also be used when an individual presents with an altered mental state or other behavioral changes, especially in the elderly.

Monobind has improved assay "ease of use" by adding red dye to the Neutralization Buffer which allows users to better distinguish extraction steps. The solution will be neutral after the addition of the first extraction reagent and red in color after the addition of the neutralizing buffer in the second step. The procedure is otherwise unchanged.
