Interleukin 6 (IL-6) serves as an early detector of inflammatory response to pathogens or injury, and when chronic disease. IL-6 is a member of the cytokine class that induces both pro- and anti-inflammatory responses. Overproduction of IL-6 is systematically linked to many autoimmune diseases through induction of B cells into antibody-producing plasma cells and therefore hypergammaglobulinemia and autoantibody production.
